People In Music History
Ives, Charles [Edward] (1874-1954) American composer of music that, all
written before 1920, anticipates later devices, e.g., Polytonality, Polyrhythm,
quarter-tones. Was organist and choirmaster and had business career, his work
being little recognized until his Concord piano sonata was played in 1939 and
his symphony no. 3 in 1946. Works include 5 symphonies, Three Places in New
England for orchestra, and songs.
